COAST GUARD COLLEGE STUDENT PRE-COMMISSIONING INITIATIVE (CSPI)
Eligibility:
U.S. citizens who have at least 60 college credits by the end of their sophomore year,
can pass the physical examination for entrance into the military, have at least a 2.5
grade point average and a score of at least a 1000 on the SAT, 1100 on the SAT I, 23
on the ACT, or 110 on the ASVAB GT are eligible to apply.
Amount:
Full tuition (both resident and non-resident), books and fees are paid for one to two
years plus a monthly salary of $2,000 with monthly allowances for housing, food and
uniforms of about $1,000. CSPI members are considered active duty military and receive
free medical and dental insurance, life insurance and 30 days paid vacation per year.
Application/selection: Students interested in one or two year awards should apply during
their sophomore or junior years as early as possible to participate in the next academic
year (the deadline to submit a CSPI package is February 1rst of the preceding academic
year but putting together a complete package will take at least 1-2 months). The Coast
Guard is highly selective of its officer candidates and applicants will undergo a physical,
write a personal essay and be interviewed by a group of Coast Guard officers as part of
their application process. The applicants selected will be notified at the end of the
spring semester. Those accepted will go through basic training at Cape May NJ during the
summer before their first academic year in the program and will attend officer candidacy
school after graduating from Rutgers Camden.
