FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE FOR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS
Yes, it is possible to use financial aid for study abroad programs!

Matriculated RU students who currently receive financial aid and participate in a Rutgers Study Abroad option may have that assistance applied toward their educational costs.

Matriculated RU students who participate in a study abroad program sponsored by another college or university may be eligible to receive financial assistance. Rutgers University, as the "home" institution, must enter into a consortium or contractual agreement* with the sponsoring institution to arrange RU financial aid payment to the host institution.

Non-RU students should contact the financial aid office at their home institutions to discuss specific financial aid options and procedures. Rutgers University, in this case, serves as the host institution and the RU Office of Financial Aid provides cost of attendance figures to and enters into a consortium or contractual agreement* with the home institution.

Please note that Rutgers does not accept consortium agreements for summer terms.

Keep in mind that financial aid procedures for study abroad take additional time and planning. The Office of Financial Aid will assist students in making necessary arrangements, but it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all required applications and documents, both academic and financial aid, are submitted in accordance with current policy and in a timely manner.

* A consortium agreement is a written agreement between two federal-aid-eligible institutions under which students may take courses at a school other than the "home" institution and have those courses count toward the degree at the home school. A contractual agreement is an agreement between an eligible institution and an ineligible school or organization. Under such an agreement, the ineligible school or organization provides, under written contract, a portion of the eligible school’s educational program.
